Outstanding Senior Female

Kimberly Marfo

This is the highest award presented by the faculty of Smoky Hill High School.  The award is given by the vote of the faculty to the senior female student whom they believe has those qualities that exemplify the outstanding female member of the senior class.

"I am honored to present the OUTSTANDING FEMALE of SMOKY HILL HIGH SCHOOL 2020.  This young woman is a gentle giant, a beautiful person inside and out.  She has a heart of gold and the spirit to change the world.  I have been very fortunate to work with KIM MARFO for the past 2 years.  She was an officer for National Honor society both her junior and senior years.  I have always had tremendous respect for Kim or as I affectionately call her, Kimmy.

But one year ago, things changed in our relationship when Kim and her friend Luis asked if I could be their adult sponsor for their Rocky Mountain Dawgs project.  I was able to work very closely with Kim observing her interactions with adults and peers, witnessing her maturity and responsibility as her project grew from a little ‘dog toy collection’ day to something….huge!  Kim Marfo and her friend Luis eventually hosted the 1st ever dog walk at Smoky Hill.  They created and sold shirts.  Advertised throughout the school and community.  Heck, they were even featured on channel 4 news! They hosted families, military, fire department and neighbors.  They served lunch and asked clubs to participate in events for the day.  The monies raised from the past year went to help purchase a service dog for a veteran with PTSD.  Kim did an amazing job and I am truly grateful that I was able to work so closely with her.  And, I am truly grateful for her desire to make a difference in our world.

Yes, Kimmy is smart and nice and kind and fun and responsible and outstanding in every way BUT….what I find most outstanding about her is that when I asked her, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” she says, ‘a civil engineer’.  And I say, why? And Kimmy says, “because I want to change the world!”

Kimmy Marfo will attend Notre Dame.  Norte Dame has an engineers without borders program, which she plans to participate in.  And she will, without question, change the world.

Congratulations on this well-deserved award Kimmy!" - Mrs. Katie Kleeman

"Kimberly Marfo is one of my favorite humans, period. She conducts herself with grace and dignity, listens eagerly to every-and-anyone, and is never afraid to stand up for herself and make her own thoughts and ideas known. She positively impacts everyone around her, whether it’s with her quiet understanding, her words of wisdom beyond her years, or her professional-level and perfectly aimed “stink eye” (usually directed at Luis Vargas). I am so happy that Kimberly has won this award for she is not one to draw attention to herself -- she is genuinely humble -- but she deserves so much praise. You would be pretty hard-pressed to find anyone who would have a bad thing to say about Kimberly. She treats everyone with respect, which ultimately speaks to the respect that she has for herself. And I am certainly not the only one who thinks so highly of her." - Michael Ady, IB Program Director

Mrs. Keller said, “I am always struck by her quiet wisdom, hardwork and ability. She is very insightful, always listening, and always turns in amazing work.”

Mrs. Gonzalez said, “I have had the great pleasure of working with Kim Marfo for three consecutive years in my Spanish classes. Kim has been always very supportive and inclusive of others in class and listened thoughtfully to the contributions of her peers. Her classmates respect her, not just because she is obviously very bright but also, she is always down to earth and shows genuine interest for her peers and has a kind word for everybody. Despite the struggles Kim overcame when she came to the US as a young kid having to learn English and adjust to a new culture, she went beyond that obstacle and pursued the learning of Spanish language and culture. Kim showed resilience, determination, and a passion for appreciating other cultures, values, and traditions.  I will greatly miss her in class and her big kind smile.”

And Mr. Holguin added, “Kimberly is amazing. She is my geek whisperer. For the past two years in my AP Calculus and in IB Calculus HL there is a rule that if there is a question at her table they have to ask Kimberly first and she gets to decide if it needs to be sent up the chain of command to me. Everyone knows that if I have a sub or something, Kimberly is in charge.”
