Male Athlete of the Year with Honors
Obasanjo Sanni
Football & Wrestling
"I have had the chance to work with many good players and athletes who were very good people. Obasanjo stands out among his peers when it comes to character, hard work and potential for high achievement.
Obasanjo is at the top of his class at Smoky Hill High School; 3.9 student. He is a unanimous All-League football player in the Metro 10 conference and 2 time Offensive Player of the Year. He has led the state in scoring and rushing for 2 years in a row. His leadership has led to a complete 180 of the Smoky Hill football program over the past 2 years as proven by a 21-2 record and the 1st play-off victory since 1991. The best compliment I can give Obasanjo is that he never misses a single class, practice, game, play, workout, rep or meeting. He prepares himself as a student and he practices as well as he plays. He has not only played football but also contributed to our track team. Obasanjo is extremely bright and talented. His listening ability, courage, and commitment set him apart from his peers.
He is a tremendous example for younger students to look at in how to approach school, athletics and life. He has been a partner for the Unified basketball team for 4 years and has helped countless members of that program through his care and concern for those kids. He is an excellent student who cares about his schoolwork and will do everything and more that a teacher asks of him. He has the potential to achieve whatever goals he sets for himself. Simply put, Obasanjo is a winner.
As you can tell, I am very biased towards Obasanjo. He is a person I am proud to have coached and taught and would take 11 of him any time. He represents Smoky Hill with class and character and is deserving of this wonderful award." - Tom Thenell, Head Football Coach
"If you were going to create the ideal student athlete, Obie Sanni is what you would get.
Not only is he a great athlete, but he’s a tremendous student, a great leader, and one of the best people I have ever met. He’s never “too good” for someone, and never believes he has it made. He works every day to be better.
Smoky Hill is a better place because of what Obie has done the last 4 years. His impact on the community and building will be felt long after he graduates." - Jake Fisher, Head Wrestling Coach
